During a March 4 inspection by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Los Angeles Calco, Inc. in Arcadia was cited five times for foodborne biological hazards, according to information on the FDA’s website.
The FDA’s posted data details the following citations given to the company:
- ‘Personnel do not have the combination of education, training, and experience to enable them to perform their duties in a manner that ensures compliance with the produce safety regulation.’
- ‘You did not ensure that personnel who may contact produce or food contact surfaces use hygienic practices to protect against produce contamination.’
- ‘You did not use equipment and tools that are of adequate design, construction, and workmanship to enable them to be adequately cleaned and maintained.’
- ‘Your written environmental monitoring plan does not list a sufficient number of sampling sites to determine whether measures are effective.’
- ‘You did not test the spent sprout irrigation water or sprouts from each production batch of sprouts for pathogens using a scientifically valid method.’
The FDA carries out regular inspections at facilities nationwide to assess whether workplaces and their products adhere to FDA-regulated standards for public health. The agency makes inspection findings publicly available.
The FDA states on its website that its primary duties include overseeing the safety and quality of human and animal drugs, biological products, medical supplies, and tobacco products.
