Duarte City Council Proclaims May 2022 as Older Americans Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Webp meeting 02

At its meeting on Tuesday, May 10, the Duarte City Council proclaimed May 2022 as Older Americans Month, recognizing the value of older individuals in the strength and wisdom they offer. The Duarte City Council also proclaimed May 2022 as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, honoring the achievements that the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have contributed to our society.

“This month, we encourage our residents to honor older adults and recognize the wisdom and lessons learned through personal experiences they have collected throughout their years,” said Mayor Pro Tem Tzeitel Paras-Caracci. “This year’s theme, Age My Way, allows us to explore ways older adults can remain involved with their communities through creative outlets and recreational opportunities, like ones offered at the Duarte Senior Center.”

Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month and the City of Duarte takes the opportunity to recognize its older adults that have contributed volunteer hours to the Senior Center. This year, Council recognized Dennis Greenwell as Senior Center Volunteer of the Year for his dedication to the Senior Center as one of its most active volunteers.

Greenwell is an active senior volunteer who oversees the pickleball program and serves as caller at Tuesday Bingo. He volunteers an average of 12 hours weekly, 576 hours annually, saving the City over $8,000 in yearly staffing costs. Greenwell will be formally recognized at the 2022 Los Angeles County's Board of Supervisors Annual Older Americans Recognition Day Awards ceremony on Thursday, May 26.

“As we recognize our older residents who have helped make our community a better place, we also turn our attention to celebrate AAPI month,” said Councilmember Vinh Truong. “By recognizing the wisdom of our older Americans and celebrating the achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, we can continue to make Duarte an inclusive place for everyone.”

At the meeting, Duarte City Council presented the AAPI proclamation to Edward Yen with the Los Angeles County Asian American Employees Association.
