Duarte Senior Center Receives YWCA Champions of Change Award

Duarte Senior Center Receives YWCA Champions of Change Award

On Thursday, November 10, the Duarte Senior Center received the 2022 Champions of Change Award from the YWCA of the San Gabriel Valley. The YWCA 2022 Champions of Change award looks to honor community, organizational, and public service champions for social and public policy change. The Senior Center staff and Duarte Recreation leaders were recognized for their outstanding efforts to ensure continued community connection among senior citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. Duarte City Councilmember Vinh Truong accepted the award on behalf of the Parks and Recreation Department and Senior Center at the ceremony.

“We want to sincerely thank the YWCA of San Gabriel Valley for recognizing the work of our Recreation leaders and Senior Center staff as Champions of Change,” said Duarte City Councilmember Vinh Truong. “By pivoting our senior meal services to a drive-thru model and partnering with the YWCA of San Gabriel Valley to leverage volunteers, our staff showed innovation in the face of crisis. The City could not be more proud of the hard work and dedication of staff members in their support of our community and some of the most valued and vulnerable members of our community, our seniors. Special thanks to Parks and Recreation Director Manuel Enriquez and Senior Center Supervisor Susie Perez for their leadership.”

In partnership with the YWCA of the San Gabriel Valley, the Duarte Senior Center and Parks and Recreation staff provided household essentials, groceries, and kept Duarte seniors informed and up-to-date on City news throughout the pandemic. During this time, the Duarte Senior Center, with the help of dedicated volunteers, distributed over 200,000 meals during the pandemic to seniors in need.

The Duarte Senior Center (1610 Huntington Drive) serves residents 55 years and older. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 2 PM. Learn more about Duarte Senior Center programs and services by visiting the Duarte Senior Center webpage or calling (626) 357-3513.
